Filipino Psychology

Studying Filipino psychology and cultural concepts have been key to my personal decolonization journey.

A Walk Through History:

The Philippines' history is a mix of indigenous culture, Spanish colonizers, American influencers – it's a cultural rollercoaster. These historical layers contribute to what makes Filipino culture today, influencing everything from our values to how we view the world and relate to each other. Another interesting dynamic would be what is colonized and what is indigenized. I recommend you research that yourself. :)

Bayanihan Spirit:

Ever heard of "bayanihan"? It is simple but profound – about community, everyone pitching in for a common goal. Think of it as the family potluck party where everyone brings something to the table. This spirit of communal unity and cooperation is deeply embedded in our culture, fostering strong family ties and a sense of belonging.

Hiya, Pakikisama:

Now, let's talk about "hiya" and "pakikisama." "Hiya" is like that feeling you get when you accidentally walk into a room wearing your shirt inside out – that awkward embarrassment. It's the fear of social disapproval, and it plays a huge role in shaping how we behave in social settings.

"Pakikisama," on the other hand, is our getting along with everyone. It's the ability to navigate social circles without causing a ruckus. Filipinos value harmony in relationships, and "pakikisama" is our way of ensuring we all get along (or at least look it).

Bahala Na and the Art of Going with the Flow:

Now, here's a phrase you might be familiar with – "Bahala Na." It's not just a saying; it's a way of life. It reflects a sense of fatalism, an acceptance that life is unpredictable, and sometimes, you just have to go with the flow. It's our secret weapon for facing challenges with a sense of freedom and resilience.

Kapwa:

"Kapwa" emphasizes the interconnectedness of all of us, promoting empathy, compassion, and a sense of shared identity. It's that warm feeling you get when you realize we're all part of the same big picture. It's like when you see the reflection of yourself in another person's eyes and you feel one in the same.

Colonial Mentality:

But, let's not forget the uninvited guest in Filipino psychology – colonial mentality. It's like that friend who won't leave the party, enforcing euro-centric beauty standards, colonial education, and social hierarchies. Understanding and addressing this complexity is a path of healing. It's like untangling earphones – tricky, but possible.

Here's the surface of some Filipino psychological concepts. Our psyche is woven with historical threads, cultural values, and communal strength As we continue to navigate modern life, understanding and embracing these layers helps us tap into our own inner knowing.
